Overview
Over the course of three years and six semesters, a student can earn two separate degrees: an MSW degree awarded by the College of Social Work and a Master of Public Health (MPH) awarded by the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine.
The MSW/MPH program is for students who seek advanced training in social work and public health. Students pursuing the MSW/MPH dual degree will acquire the skills needed to work in all three sectors, understanding the social service aspect of public health. These skills include the planning, management, and delivery of human and health services at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. Students completing the dual degree will have a more rounded understanding of human behavior in the environment, as well as how individuals and communities are impacted by programs developed with a health focus.
Coursework
Students in the dual degree program complete 52 credit hours of MSW coursework and 30 credit hours of MPH coursework. By combining the two programs, a student will save 23 credit hours.
Students in this dual degree program are required to select the Health Area of Focus.
Both degrees are conferred at the same time even if requirements are completed for
one before the other. Additionally, a student may not take the CSW licensing exam
until both degrees are completed.
Admission
Students who wish to complete a dual degree must apply to and be accepted by both programs during the same application cycle in order to begin their dual degree program.
Admission/acceptance into one program does not guarantee admission/acceptance into the other.
Dual degree programs are not available to students enrolled in the MSW Online and Three-Year Programs.
