MSW/MPH Dual Degree Program Course Checklist

It is your responsibility to ensure that your degree and licensing requirements are met and in order to move into the second year of the program. Your academic advisor is available to help you. Please meet with the MSW advisor at least once per academic year to ensure you are on track.

Year One (MSW only)

Grades:

  • Students must earn a C+ or better in each of the MSW required courses including Practicum to take the second course in any sequenced courses (e.g., Practice I and Practice II) and in order to move forward in the program
  • Students must earn a B- or better in all MPH courses
  • Students must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA in order to be in good academic standing

MSW Area of focus:

  • Health in Social Work

Coursework:

  • All first year MSW courses are held during the day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and second/third year MSW courses are held during the day on Thursdays and Fridays
  • Courses may not count for the other program’s requirements (i.e., MSW elective counting toward MPH elective)

Practicum:

  • MSW Practicum (fieldwork) is completed on weekdays not scheduled for classes. The majority of practicum placements take place during normal business hours. Therefore, evening/weekend opportunities are likely to be limited.

Capstone:

Students are eligible to enroll in PBHLT 6900 Capstone only after they have completed six of the seven other core courses (PBHLT 6100, 6300, 6400, 6500, 6550, 6600 and 6700).

MPH Comprehensive Exam:

After completing PBHLT 6100, 6300, 6400, 6500, 6600, 6700, and 6550, students must pass the Certified in Public Health (CPH) exam. Sign-up by requesting a voucher code for payment. Exam is offered year-round but students must be registered for a minimum of three credits during the semester in which the exam is taken. Contact the MPH Academic Advisor to obtain a voucher code for payment.

Faculty Advising:

Your three faculty committee members are: Dr. Christy Porucznik, Dr. Jim VanDerslice, and Dr. Lisa Gren. It is recommended that you meet with them for 15-20 minutes/semester. They are available for approval of electives, career advising, practicum advising, etc. Please view the office hours for availability.

MPH Practicum:

Students must submit copies of their MSW practicum documentation to the MPH program upon completion
