Applicants will be notified of their final admission decision within approximately 8 weeks after the application deadline. Please be sure that you begin the application process with plenty of time for your professional references to submit their letters of recommendation.
The Substance Use Disorder Treatment Training Certificate (SUDTTC) Program is dedicated to helping students develop the solid knowledge base and treatment skills necessary to assist individuals with substance use disorders and their families. The overarching goal of the Program is to enhance the quality of substance use disorder treatment and care delivery available in the state of Utah.
Students may choose from one of two tracks: Substance Use Disorder Counselor or Advanced Substance Use Disorder Counselor. Scroll to "Choose Your Track" for more information. Coursework for this certificate may be completed for academic credit or for professional non-credit. The SUDTTC program can be completed in person or online. SUDC Track
Substance Use Disorder Counselor
3-4 Semesters
Eligibility
Students must have Associate's or Bachelor's degree completed or in progress at time of application.
Field Training
- 200 Hours
- Completed in final semester; 14-17 hours per week.
Scope of Practice
- Administer screening process by which a client is determined to need substance use disorder services which may include screening, brief intervention, and treatment referral
- Conduct assessment procedures to gather information related to an individual's strengths, weaknesses, needs, and substance use disorder symptoms for the development of a treatment plan.
- Participation in the process of treatment planning, including recommending specific interventions to support existing treatment goals and objectives.
- Other activities as outlined in Utah Code 58-60-502 (10)(b)
- Practice under general supervision of qualified mental health therapist (MHT)
ASUDC Track
Advanced Substance Use Disorder Counselor
4-5 Semesters
Eligibility
Students must have Bachelor's degree completed or in progress at time of application.
Field Training
- 350 Hours
- Completed in final semester; 24-30 hours per week.
Scope of Practice
Everything a SUDC can do, PLUS:
- Identify substance use disorder symptoms and behaviors and co-occurring health issues
- Treatment planning for substance use disorders diagnosed by MHT
- Qualified to supervise SUDC as they gather hrs. of supervised experience
Please be aware that completing the SUDTTC Program and earning a certificate of proficiency does NOT guarantee that you will become licensed. Licensing is controlled by the state on a case-by-case basis. Additional information in regard to obtaining your Substance Use Disorder Counselor (SUDC) or Advanced Substance Use Disorder Counselor (ASUDC) license may be found through the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing: http://www.dopl.utah.gov/. The University of Utah has no authority with licensing.
The University of Utah discloses below whether the Substance Use Disorder Treatment Training will fulfill state/territory educational requirements for professional licensure and/or certification. Some state licensing boards require additional requirements beyond education, which may include (but are not limited to): additional post-graduation examinations or experience, application and licensing fees, criminal background checks, reference checks, fingerprint submissions, etc. Continuing education may also be required for maintenance of certification/licensure. Make sure you understand and review any additional requirements prior to enrolling in the Substance Use Disorder Treatment Training program.
A personal history of alcohol and/or substance abuse or conviction for past criminal activity or conduct does not affect the chances of a student being admitted to the program. Students, however, must be advised that past or future substance abuse or criminal activity may limit or inhibit them from securing an internship, which is required for completion of the SUDTTC Program. In addition, students may be ineligible to receive a state license to practice or obtain employment in the field.
