Cap and Gown Orders

Regalia is required for both Convocation and Commencement. College of Social Work graduates can purchase a black gown and a black cap with a citron-colored tassel, MSW hoods (citron-colored trim), and PhD hoods at the University Campus Store. Special caps and gowns are also available if desired. Graduates are encouraged to pre-order their regalia on the Campus Store's website starting March 1st and pick up their order during the Graduation Regalia Fair, held from March 30 - April 1, 2023 at the Campus Store. Questions may be directed to Abby Hirshberg (ahirshberg@campusstore.utah.edu, 801-581-4733).

Line-up of Graduates and Processional

To participate in the College of Social Work’s Convocation Ceremony, graduates should arrive in cap and gown in front of the Park Building, located on President’s Circle, by 8:15 AM on Friday, May 5. The tassel is worn on the right side of the cap and moved to the left side after the graduate accepts their diploma. The PhD hood should not be worn, but should be folded and carried over an arm.

Photographers from the College will organize a group photo of all CSW graduates. Immediately following the group photo, students will line up for the processional in the following order: BSW, MSW, PhD, and those to be seated on stage. CSW personnel will be available to guide graduates in the final line-up.

Kingsbury doors will open around 8:30 AM, and the processional will begin promptly at 8:55 AM. Guests are asked to avoid the entrance and lobby of Kingsbury Hall during the processional.

In the event of stormy weather, students should go directly to the west side of Kingsbury Hall and meet inside the building on the lower level.

Ph.D. Hooding Procedures

The director of doctoral studies will read the names of PhD graduates and the hooding will be done on stage by the CSW dean and the committee chair.

RSVP & Tickets

All guests will be required to have a physical ticket to enter Kingsbury Hall for the convocation ceremony. Students will need to complete the  Convocation RSVP & Ticket Form by April 2, 2023.  This form will help us determine how many guest tickets each student will get based on graduation numbers and other factors. Student will be able to collect tickets at ticket distribution times in April, which will be announced closer to the date of graduation. Students will also pick up a blank reader card with their tickets, which they will need to fill out and bring with them on the day of convocation to have their name read aloud properly as they walk across the stage.

Guest Seating

As noted above, all guests will need a paper ticket to enter Kingsbury Hall. Students will be responsible for distributing their tickets to guests and ensuring that they bring them to convocation. Free parking will be available on campus particularly in the Rice Eccles Stadium parking lot, with shuttle services to Kingsbury Hall. Due to convocations and other events taking place at the University, there may be traffic and detours on campus. Please refer to the Commencement Parking website for updates and ensure that you and your guests plan accordingly.
