Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the current tuition for Summer Institute classes:
Non-Credit Tuition: Listed for each individual course; see page 22.
For-Credit Tuition: 5860 courses, see www.acs.utah.edu/tuition/t-underu.htm
6860 courses, see www.acs.utah.edu/tuition/t-gradswrk.htm
2. What is the special fee for?
All courses, whether taken "non-credit" or "for-credit," include a special fee of $20.00 per course. These fees cover materials, course handouts, reserved parking, etc., and must be paid with registration. The special fee amount cannot be discounted or refunded.
3. How do I determine which course number to register for?
Professionals attending the Summer Institute will likely take classes "non-credit." This is the 860 number. University students or other participants wishing to take classes "for-credit" will sign up for either the 5860 number (undergraduate) or 6860 number (graduate). If you are not currently an admitted University of Utah student, but wish to take a class for-credit, you must apply for admission.
4. Will I receive a grade when taking a course during the Summer Institute?
In one credit hour classes, all students will receive a grade of either "credit" or "no-credit" based on attendance. A minimum of 95% attendance is required to receive "credit." No letter grades will be given for one credit hour classes. Students taking two credit hour classes for "credit" will receive a grade. The grade will be based on attendance and an assignment and/or test. Students taking non-credit classes will receive a CEU certificate - no University of Utah record of registration will be created.
5. How do I Receive NASW/UPA Endorsed Continuing Education Credits?
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for all courses. There will be forms available at the Information/Registration Desk in the Social Work building, Room 112. Individuals seeking CEUs will need to fill out one of these forms indicating courses for which they are seeking CEU credit. The College of Social Work will verify length of attendance for each course and mail the certificate by July 31, 2007. The number of available hours of CEU credits, approved by the Utah Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) for social workers (and allied professions, such as LPCs), and endorsed by Utah Psychological Association (UPA) for psychologists, are listed on each individual course. There is no additional charge for CEU certification.
6. What if I need to cancel my registration? What's the policy? What about substitutions?
If you cannot attend a workshop for which you are registered, you must formally cancel your registration. You will be charged a cancellation fee: ten working days prior to the start of a course $20, five working days prior to the start of a course $30, two days prior to the begining of the course $50. Not attending a course for which you are registered, and failure to cancel the course will result in an obligation to pay full tuition. Under certain circumstances, you may arrange for a substitute to come in your place. Call Irene at (801) 581-8913 for details.
7. Will my Summer Institute course certify me as an expert or trainer in a modality?
