McPhee Research Scholarship

McPhee Research Scholarship Description: This scholarship has been established to recognize achievement and promise in PhD studies at the College of Social Work through the generous contributions of Dr. William M. McPhee, Professor Emeritus. The award is designed to honor outstanding scholarship and to provide support for dissertations that promise to make significant contributions to social work practice or public policy. To promote rigorous study and research and to help defray the costs of student dissertation research, 2-4 awards will be made to outstanding doctoral students or candidates. All doctoral students and candidates in the College of Social Work may apply. The scholarship is designed to assist students who have begun their academic work toward a PhD degree.

Selection Process and Criteria: The PhD Committee will screen all applications and make the award subject to review by the Dean. The award will be made on the basis of the quality of the candidate’s previous academic record and research plans.

McPhee Application Letter: There is not a formal application form but four (4) copies of an application letter should be submitted to the University of Utah College of Social Work PhD Program at 395 South 1500 East, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112. The letter should include the following:

  1. Date of Application
  2. Subject: McPhee Application
  3. Contact Information: Name, Address, Telephone(s), E-mail Address
  4. Brief summary of applicant’s dissertation plan and career goals
  5. First Attachment: Dissertation proposal or description of proposed dissertation (introduction, problem statement, conceptual framework, brief review of literature, methodology, implications for practice and policy, etc.)
  6. Second Attachment: Current Vitae or Resume
