Jacobsen Scholarship

Jacobsen Scholarship Description: The Jacobsen Scholarship Award is made annually to individuals enrolled in formal degree programs at the University of Utah College of Social Work. The emphasis of study for the Jacobsen Scholar(s) focuses on issues of concern to women, with particular emphasis on strengthening families. The Jacobsen Scholar(s) will, to the fullest extent possible, work in collaboration with the Belle S. Spafford Chair at the College of Social Work and the University's Lowell Bennion Community Service Center. The award will be renewable for up to three years.

Selection Committee: Jacobsen Scholars are selected by a committee appointed by the College Dean, and includes the Spafford Professor, the Director of the Ph.D. Program, the College's Scholarship Committee Chair, a representative of the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center, and others as appropriate. The committee selects individuals who reflect the values and ideals that have guided Florence S. Jacobsen's philanthropy and service throughout her life, including her strong commitment to women, families and family life.

Selection Process and Criteria: Applicants should submit an application in the following format to the Spafford Chair. The Jacobsen Scholarship Committee will screen all applicants and nominations. Criteria will include interest in academically-based community scholarship and service that focuses on issues of concern to women, with particular emphasis on strengthening families. Additional criteria will include excellence in course work, personal time and energy contributions to the community at large, published papers, conference presentations, and related activities.

Jacobsen Application Letter: There is not a formal application form but four (4) copies of an application letter should be submitted to the University of Utah College of Social Work, Attn Belle Spafford Professor, 395 South 1500 East, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112. The letter should include the following:

  1. Date of Application
  2. Contact Information: Name, Address, Telephone(s), E-mail Address
  3. Year in Ph.D. Program: Applicant, 1st Year, 2nd Year, Pre-Candidate, Candidate
  4. Paragraph describing substantive, service, and research interests.
  5. Do you have a research project or dissertation topic identified as an area of future study? If yes, please describe in three pages or less and attach to the application.
  6. Please attach a curriculum vitae to the application. Be sure it summarizes your experiences, scholarly activities, and interests in women and their families.
