Effective May 2005, the College of Social Work offers MSW students the opportunity to complete an International Social Work Emphasis. The purpose of the Emphasis is to enhance student preparation for professional social work practice within the context of global, international social work practice abroad, and practice with multi-cultural populations in the United States.
The Emphasis provides an optional course of study for MSW students and is designed to complement any of the four domains of practice. The required course components, which can be completed within the established credit hours for completion of the MSW program, are as follows:
One survey course in international social work:
- Perspectives in International Social Work (Fall semester)
- Intensive Spanish & Cultural Studies for Social Workers (study abroad program, July 05)
- Cross Cultural Communication (Summer)
One internationally related practicum:
- International practicum or domestic practicum with substantial emphasis on international populations
Two additional graduate level courses related to the student's substantive area of international social work emphasis:
- Intensive Spanish & Cultural Studies for Social Workers (study abroad program, July 05)
- Cross Cultural Communication (Summer)
- Independent Study
- Independent Research
- By approval, courses in related disciplines, e.g., anthropology, political science, economics, education, peace and conflict studies
